There are two different stories regarding when the first Father’s day was celebrated. The first story says that the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. A church in West Virginia celebrated this day in honor of fathers. It was celebrated in honor of those 361 men that had died in the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah. It was celebrated that year only and not the following year and it was not an annual holiday.
The other story says that the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Washington State. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd brought the idea of celebrating the Father’s Day after she heard of the Mother’s Day sermon at the church in 1909. She was one of the six child of a father who was a widower as his wife died while giving the birth to the sixth child. Her father William Smart was a veteran of the Civil War. She saw all the hard ward his dad did in order to raise all her siblings and the love with which he treated them. So she decided to honor his dad and the other dads like him out there because a father plays an important role in the life of his children. She suggested June 5 to be celebrated as the Father’s Day which was the death anniversary of her father but due to some reasons it was celebrated on the third Sunday of the month June. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson made the third Sunday of June as the official Father’s Day. But it was officially recognized as a national holiday in 1972, during the Nixon administration.
